Meet Brian, CEO of Brian Daps Clothing

Brian Maphumulo is a 37 year old who has had a huge Interest in fashion designing and tailor making from a very young age. He developed the love and skill for fashion through his mother who was also a fashion stylist and tailor. He then decided to know props and studied further at Lindiwe Khuzwayo Fashion School in Durban , He has been in the business for 12 years.

Brian has worked with a lot of people from the likes of Joe Nina, DJ Oros etc. He has also showcased in various fashion shows such as Durban Fashion Fair, Durban July, Dundee July, Garden of Fashion.

Was Fashion Always Your Ideal Career ?

No, I always dreamt of being a pilot or mechanical engineer. However I now think fashion was a calling for me, it runs in the family.

What keeps you motivated in this business?

The compliments that my clients give regarding my work, appreciation by a lot of clients it really keeps me going And also life itself, knowing that I have A Purpose.”

What are some of the challenges you have to deal with as a fashion designer?

Finding material and dealing with impossible clients at times but the most straining is having to juggle between working, marketing and research. At the same time you have your craft to dedicate to. Seating on the sowing machine all day sometimes all night, being restless.

Giving advice to a young person wanting to become a fashion designer, Brian explains “All you need to have is patience and dedication. You can’t do it without love and you can’t do it just because you want a source of income. With fashion designing, you learn a lot of things on a daily basis and everyday is a new challenge.”

Brian has a new clothing brand called “6 digitz” which is currently making sights all over the streets of KZN.
