Black Carpet: Metro Music Awards 2017

Thando Gugulethu

A rundown on some of the best dressed black carpet looks and not forgetting those who did not get the memo at this year’s biggest night in the music industry.

The 16th annual metro music awards had the masses on full party mode this past weekend in Durban, ICC. Popularly considered as the biggest music award ceremony in the country, the 16th edition was no different, delivering on all fronts, the biggest one being; the fashion. Themed ‘what’s next is all that matters’ aiming for perfection- celebrities, nominees, and the winners brought their own interpretation to the black carpet, and in true South African they did not disappoint.

While your usual suspects Bonang Matheba, Nomzamo Mbatha, Boity Thulo, came out guns blazing, others decided to throw the rules out of the window. Think back to-

Ambitious Records Hip-hop star, Emtee and Afro soul singer Sjava, who also happened to win an award for best produced album, arrived on the red carpet half naked. There was no obligation to wear formal but this was a big NO, NO! Many on social media were just not feeling it, a bit of effort has never killed anyone!

Similarly, Nhlanhla ‘Skolopad’ Qwaba caused a stand still on social media as she arrived in a yellow dress with a slit that goes on, and on, and on, that left her exposing her goods to the entire nation as she wore no underwear. As if that wasn’t enough, in her attempts to get a good picture she kept on lifting her dress revealing a glimpse of her buttocks each time.

Nevertheless, the fashion-themeter was on a 100! as celebrities pulled out all the stops.

Mafikizalo’s Nhlanhla Nciza and Theo kgosinkwe got onto stage to accept the “most stylish group” nod looking very stylish in black and white, as they always do.  Nhlanhla’s poker dot dress and Theo’s tailored suit, side by side, was just pure perfection.  Dressed by Mrs Nciza’ clothing label, NN Vintage, the duo was serving elegance, class and style all at once.

Despite all other efforts, actress Ntando Duma without a shadow of doubt stole the night. Duma opted to arrive in a flowing long length dress, with an embellished top showing just the right amount of cleavage created by 96th avenue and styled by Lulu shabz. The young actress looked like a million bucks. Exceptionally breathe taking! According to most social media users, she was, by far, the best dressed for the night.

This year’s MMA saw it all. The hits, the misses and the weird choice of clothing. Weather you loved them or you hated them, it was a night to remember.
