The EFF Student Command demands justice for Madonsela

Students at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) were expected to resume their academic activities that were suspended for a week due to the national shutdown that took place in all universities in KZN; however things did not go as expected as the Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command (EFFSC), started another march to the Durban City Hall in order to submit a memorandum demanding justice for Mlungisi Madonsela.

Madonsela was shot by a private security on the Steve Biko DUT campus. It is believed he was shot at 3 times and later died at the City hospital where was receiving treatment.

Before the handing over the memorandum, students stressed that they are now afraid of accessing campus because they might also be victims of gunfire, especially those who are student activists.

The march was joined by one of the EFFSC student activists from the University of Johannesburg(UJ), Kamvelihle Goba who shortly addressed crowds and said “KZN is one of the strongest hold points of the struggle, as UJ we are here to support you comrades because when you contact us that you demand a shutdown, we act immediately because we know the struggle, we know police and we also have bouncers at UJ who always beat us up, these police as they killed people in Marikana just know that they won’t mind doing it to students.”

The memorandum was then submitted by the SRC President Sesiyanda Godlimpi and it read “The Students after assessing progress on many issues, in particular the issue of students has noted delays in arresting those who killed the student, the students therefore demand the following: -The securities who killed Mlungisi Mdonsela to be arrested immediately –The security company and university must be prosecuted.”

Dumbela accepted the memorandum on behalf of the Mayor and said “We will ensure that the memorandum reaches the office of the premier and we are hoping through it, it will also reach the office of the President as well as the NPA.” He adds that whatever issues that students face are also a concern to them as the municipality.

According to EFFSC the academic activities remain suspended.
