Academic activities at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Westville have been suspended due to protest action by students.
Protesting students were met by campus security Mi7 and police who used stun grenades to disperse the crowd and within that commotion 17 students were arrested. The arrested students are facing charges of public violence and vandalism of property.
The protest was started by female students who live in an outsourced residence known as Grand district logue. According to Thandeka who is the residence chairperson, the protest was brought on by poor living conditions due to ongoing construction.
“When we arrived at the residence at the beginning year there was construction going on and till this day it is still happening. We can only study at night because during the day the machines that workers use are noisy. I have brought this up with housing and the SRC but I have had no response from them.” Said Thandeka
Furthermore when students are having a meeting at the residence the landlord always sends security to dismantle them using force and they are not allowed to have visitors. They are also protesting for more washing machines and a more convenient WiFi.
The arrested students appeared in court this morning facing charges of Public violence and Vandalism of property, a student has confirmed the release of the girls this morning.
