From rags to riches, Soweto born and raised Portia Mohloki-Tabane is at the forefront of owning the beauty industry in South Africa. Raised from humble beginnings, the road to riches was no easy walk for Portia. It has been a lifelong dream for Portia to be immersed in the beauty industry. Her interest was sparked at a very young age, which lead to Portia being crowned ‘first princess of Miss Soweto, Miss Black beauty to many other coveted beauty titles.
After working in a high profile Government position for 12 years, Portia realised that corporate was not soul fulfilling for her. She resigned and decided to study Beauty as she felt that beauty was indeed her true calling. This was no easy task though, completing her studies, sacrificing a steady income and juggling three kids at once was a daunting job on its own.
Portia now owns BABOR Beauty Spa at the Mall of Africa has cemented itself as one of the go-to Spas in the world with its premium product offering with uplifting and empowering treatments. That’s not where it ends. She is dedicated to passing on her skills and knowledge to young black women who want to start their own business and reign supreme in their fields.
“People always thought I got to where I am only because I am a black woman, but I have fought for every single cent that has contributed to where I am today. I have learnt what to do and what not to do and I would love to pass this knowledge onto the next generation of young black female entrepreneurs in South Africa. My goal as a business owner is to empower our female youth with the necessary skills and advice to get to the top.” says Portia.
